Today, AMD divulged more details on its upcoming third-generation Fidelity Super Resolution upscaling technology, FSR 3. This technology will include a new feature called “fluid motion frames,” similar to Nvidia’s frame generation built into its DLSS 3 but only available on 40-series GPUs. AMD has announced that FSR 3 is coming soon, and when it does, it can be applied to all modern PC games and any GPU.

This move by AMD could be a monumental leap forward for gamers, as it will allow frame generation to be applied to thousands of games, regardless of which GPU you own. As always, we will have to wait and see if AMD can deliver on its promise, but if it does, it could be the dawn of a new era for PC gamers.

Right now, the main limitation of frame generation technology is that the games’ developers have to add it. Since Nvidia is the only company offering it right now, exclusive to its latest GPUs, it hasn’t been widely adopted. AMD wants to reverse that trend by supporting it on all DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games. Considering DX11 came out in 2009 and DX12 in 2014, that’s pretty much every modern title. The company says it was able to do this by using vector data already in the game to estimate what an inserted frame should look like. In contrast, Nvidia relies on dedicated hardware exclusive to the 40 series to generate frames.

The big news for gamers is AMD says that its frame generation will work on both the Radeon 7000 series and its older 6000 series GPUs. In addition, it will also work on Nvidia RTX GPUs, which include its 40 series, 30 series, and 20 series. The company also stated it might work on Intel Arc cards, though according to TechPowerUp, AMD would not confirm that. It might even work on integrated graphics and both next-generation consoles.

This could be a significant boon to owners of older Nvidia GPUs who have been left out of the frame generation party. AMD hasn’t shared any benchmarks for it running on Team Green’s cards just yet and likely never will. But the company has boasted it can double or even triple frame rates in some titles. It’ll be interesting to see how it goes on older GPUs from AMD, Nvidia, and Intel.

When FSR 3 launches, it’ll only be available in Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum, which will get patches soon. Through the fall and winter, the company says more games will add support for it, bringing the number to a dozen or so titles. Then, in Q1 of next year, it will deliver the big update that will bring it to all DX11 and DX12 games, care of its Hyper-RX technology. This is a single “switch” you can flip in software to enable all of AMD’s performance-improving technologies, but it has yet to launch.

However, GPU horsepower will still limit frame generation. It won’t work the same on all GPUs, and older GPUs will still be determined by the number of ponies under the hood. AMD does say frame generation will work on Nvidia GPUs, including the 20-series and newer, along with older Radeon 5700 cards, though it recommends one generation higher for frame gen, according to Wccftech. Standard FSR 3 upscaling without frame gen will work on any GPU.
